Gbenga Arokoyo’s story is one of resilience, passion, and impact. Born in Nigeria, he grew up with humble beginnings, where dreams were often bigger than the opportunities available. Through perseverance and hard work, he rose from the dusty fields of his hometown to the bright lights of international football.
His professional career began with Kwara United in Nigeria, before moving abroad to play for clubs such as Mjällby AIF (Sweden), Gaziantepspor (Turkey), Portland Timbers (USA), Kalmar FF (Sweden), and Umeå FC (Sweden).
On the international stage, Gbenga proudly represented Nigeria at different levels. In 2010, he won a gold medal with the Golden Eaglets at the African Youth Championship. He later graduated to the senior team, the Super Eagles of Nigeria, where he played his last international matches in 2016 against Mali and Luxembourg in France.
After a successful playing career, Gbenga transitioned into coaching, earning his UEFA A License and dedicating himself to developing the next generation of footballers. In Umeå, he has coached the Umeå FC Academy, the Umeå IK Academy, and today serves as the Head Coach of Täfteå IK. His coaching goes beyond tactics and techniques—he instills discipline, teamwork, and confidence, helping young players grow both on and off the pitch.
Beyond football, Gbenga is a role model and community builder. His contributions have positively impacted both young and old in Umeå, strengthening unity within the Nigerian community and enriching the wider society with his knowledge, humility, and leadership. Gbenga is also a devoted husband to Whitney and a proud father to two sons, KD and Chris, who remain his greatest inspiration.
